The study evaluated the water sorption behavior of four modern CAD/CAM resin composite materials—Grandio Blocs, Lava™ Ultimate, Cerasmart™, and Brilliant Crios—along with the direct composite Grandio SO. Water uptake was measured according to ISO 4049 standards, with specimens immersed in distilled water at 37°C for up to 60 days. Mass gain was recorded at multiple time intervals to generate saturation curves.
Results showed that Lava™ Ultimate absorbed the most water (42.6 g/mm³), significantly exceeding the other materials. Grandio SO displayed the lowest uptake at 14.0 g/mm³, followed by Grandio Blocs (16.5 g/mm³). Cerasmart™ and Brilliant Crios exhibited intermediate values of 28.7 and 26.7 g/mm³, respectively. All materials reached a plateau between days 14 and 21, indicating rapid initial absorption followed by stabilization. Despite their similar monomer chemistry, differences in filler composition and nanoparticle content contributed to divergent sorption profiles. Notably, Lava™ Ultimate’s high zirconia content may have increased its hydrophilicity, counteracting the expected protective effect of high filler loading.
The elevated water uptake in Lava™ Ultimate raises concerns about long-term stability, as excessive swelling can lead to interfacial debonding, microcracking, and eventual failure.
