Description :
T-cell surface glycoprotein CD3 epsilon chain, also known as CD3e, T3e, TCRe and IMD18, is a single-pass type I transmembrane protein. CD3e contains 1 Ig-like (immunoglobulin-like) domain in the extracellular region and 1 cytoplasmic ITAM (immune tyrosine activation motif) domain. CD3e, together with CD3-gamma, CD3-delta and CD3-zeta, and the T-cell receptor (TCR) alpha/beta and gamma/delta heterodimers, forms the TCR-CD3 complex. This complex plays an important role in coupling antigen recognition to several intracellular signal-transduction pathways leading to the activation of T cells. CD3e plays an essential role in T-cell development. In CD3e-deficient mice, all stages of T cell development and activation that are TCR-dependent were impaired, but not eliminated. Mutations in the CD3e gene are associated with immunodeficiency 18 (IMD18), an autosomal recessive primary immunodeficiency characterized by onset in infancy or early childhood. The CD3e gene has also been linked to a susceptibility to type I diabetes in women.
